Welcome to Shangarh Kothi, a place where you can immerse yourself in the rich culture, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality of Himachal Pradesh. Our homestay is located in Shangarh, nestled in the stunning surroundings of The Great Himalayan National Park in Sainj Valley, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.

At Shangarh Kothi, we offer a unique and authentic experience to our guests. Our accommodation includes 5 private rooms on a twin or triple sharing basis, as well as 2 family rooms with beautiful double bunk beds, all designed in the traditional Himachali Kathkuni style. The rooms are built with natural materials like mud, stone, and wood, ensuring a cozy and warm atmosphere even during cold weather.

In addition to the comfortable rooms, we also provide a traditionally designed common room where you can relax and spend quality time with your family and friends. The property boasts ample open spaces where you can sit, enjoy a cup of tea, and marvel at the breathtaking mountain ranges surrounding you. During the chilly winters and cool summers, you can gather around the separate bonfire area to keep warm and create unforgettable memories.

Day Trips

If you’re planning an extended stay, there are several beautiful locations within a short distance of Shangarh that you can explore. Visit Raila Waterfall, Twin Towers, and Bhatkanda Meadows in the charming village of Raila, located just across Shangarh. Experience the awe-inspiring waterfall, visit the traditional temples perched on top, and enjoy the picturesque Bhatkanda Meadows and sunset point. Embark on a trail to Deori village, Pundrik Lake, and Upper Nyahi to discover the beauty of these villages, the serene lake, and indulge in some delicious strawberries at cute Dadu’s cafe. The distance to Deori village is 20km from Shangarh, followed by a 30-minute walk to reach Pundrik Lake. Another must-visit destination is Sensher Temple, located approximately 20km from Shangarh on the other side of the mountain. This beautiful Himachali town is home to a centrally located Kathkuni Temple that offers a panoramic 180° view of the mountains and a sneak peek of Shangarh Meadows from a distance. For a peaceful retreat near nature, head to the Sainj River, situated 8km on the main road of Ropa. Enjoy the mesmerizing view of the river and relax on a stone while soaking in the tranquility. You can also arrange for a hot meal at a small homestay there with advance booking.

Shangarh, located within The Great Himalayan National Park, offers a plethora of offbeat treks suitable for people of all ages. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or a beginner, there’s something for everyone.

Embark on the Ganjau Thach trek, a short 1.5-hour ascent to the uphill meadows that offers a spectacular view. This trek can be completed in half a day or a full day, allowing you to carry your own lunch or snacks and return by evening.

For a more challenging adventure, opt for the Thini Thach trek, which takes approximately 4 hours to reach the mountain’s summit. This trek is ideal for camping overnight, as it involves an 8-hour round trip. The view from Thini Thach is simply breathtaking, especially during sunrise.

Trekking

Explore the Sara Lake and Raj Thach trek, a 3.5-hour trail that leads to a picturesque lake. The trek itself is incredibly scenic, winding through forests until you reach Raj Thach. Take a break and soak in the serene ambiance before continuing your journey.

Experience the Lapah Trek, a beautiful village trek within The Great Himalayan National Park Forest. This trek takes approximately 7 hours to complete and can be enjoyed by all. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty surrounding Shangarh.

For seasoned trekkers and fit individuals, the Shumga trek offers a magnificent expedition across the mountaintops over a period of 3 days. Another challenging option is the Dhela trek, which takes approximately 7 days to complete and offers a mesmerizing view of the snow-capped mountains. These treks are recommended for experienced trekkers due to their difficulty level.

How to Reach Shangarh*

To reach Shangarh, there are various travel options depending on your departure city.

If you prefer traveling by car, the distance from Delhi to Shangarh is approximately 500km, which takes around 10-12 hours. From Chandigarh, the journey is approximately 250km and takes around 6 hours.

If you are flying or taking a train, Chandigarh serves as a major transit point. From Chandigarh, you can hire a taxi directly to Shangarh.

Alternatively, public transport options are available. You can take an overnight Delhi-Manali Volvo bus to Aut, which costs approximately 1000-1500 INR. From Aut, Shangarh is around 35km and takes approximately 1.5 hours by taxi (1500-1800 INR) or bus (50 INR). Buses from Aut to Sainj are available every hour, and from Sainj, you can take another bus to Shangarh at 4 pm (30 INR). Please note that public transport can be time-consuming, so plan accordingly.
